- FAQ's | Bloom Psychology
FAQ'S The most frequently asked questions are listed below for your convenience. If your question is not answered here, please contact our friendly team at admin@bloom-psychology.com.au or call 0491 633 811 and we'll get back to you as soon as possible . What should I expect at my first appointment? Before your therapy session begins, we may ask you to fill out administrative forms to properly record your data. You may also be asked to complete some psychological assessment forms to establish a starting point from which our psychologists can work. In the first few sessions, the practitioner will typically ask you to describe the problem that has brought you into their office. They will also gather relevant information on your background, as well as the history of your problems and other major areas of your life, and the ways you have tried to address the concerns. What types of therapy or treatment do you provide? This will depend on the psychologist's theoretical perspective. For example, psychologists who use cognitive-behavioral therapy have a practical approach to treatment and might ask you to tackle certain tasks designed to help you develop more effective coping skills. What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist? Psychologists have studied human behavior and the brain and have been trained to assist people who are having challenges coping with emotions, thoughts, and actions. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialise in mental health and can prescribe medication. How long do I need? The length of treatment will depend on your individual needs and goals. Some people may only need a few sessions, while others may benefit from longer-term treatment. Do I need to pay upfront? This depends on your referral type. Please see our types of referrals page. Can my appointments be bulk billed? We are not a bulk billing clinic. How much can you save with the Medicare rebate? The Medicare rebate for Clinical psychologists and Registered Psychologists covers a portion of the cost of psychologist sessions, which can vary depending on the psychologist’s fees. As of 1st July 2023, the Medicare rebates are as follows: $136.35 rebate per 50+ minute session with a Clinical Psychologist $92.90 rebate per 50+ minute session with a Registered Psychologist. At the end of the session, your psychologist will invoice you the full session fee. At the same time, your Medicare rebate can be submitted by the psychologist or yourself. The corresponding Medicare rebate is deposited into your nominated bank account by Medicare, generally within 24 hours. Medicare rebates are only available for individual therapy. Better Access does not cover the cost of psychological reports, non-attendance fees, and couples counselling. Can I use my private health insurance? If you have private health insurance, you may be eligible to claim rebates for sessions with a psychologist. However, the cover level and applicable waiting periods vary between providers and depend on your extras cover policy. Private health typically covers both in-person and online therapy sessions. These include individual therapy sessions, as well as couples counselling and family therapy. Please get in touch with your private health insurance to determine eligibility and how much funding you are entitled to claim for psychological sessions. Is there a cancellation fee? Two days’ notice (48 hours) is required to cancel or reschedule a session and failure to provide this notice may result in the full fee being payable. We appreciate your understanding. Do I need a referral to make my initial appointment? No, a referral is not required to book an appointment.

Fees & Referals You will find the different referral pathways we accept at Bloom Psychology and Assessment below. If you would like to view our fees please contact us via phone , email or our contact form . CONTACT US Different types of referrals Mental Health Care Plan - The Mental Health Care Plan is completed by your doctor if – following a consultation with you – they assess you as qualifying for Medicare Rebates under this plan. The mental health care plan is common form of referral and details your symptoms, any diagnosis, and current issues. It allows you to obtain six individual therapy sessions at a rebated price, with the possibility of an additional four. This means you would be entitled to up to ten rebated individual sessions. You don’t need to already be diagnosed to receive a care plan from your GP. Please note, however, that although Medicare rebates can be claimed for sessions covered under a Mental Health Care Plan, there is a ‘gap fee’ involved. Better Outcomes in Mental Health ATAPS - Your GP may refer you under the Better Outcomes in Mental Health Initiative. Although this referral is very similar to the Mental Health Care Plan, it is subsidised by the Greater Metro South Brisbane Medicare Local, and hence there is no cost to you. Your GP will assess the availability and your eligibility for this referral. This Better Outcomes referral has specific eligibility criteria which must be met for referral and there is a set time frame in which the sessions must be utilised. Department of Veterans Affairs/ Open Arms - Bloom Psychology is pleased to be a provider of psychological services to our veterans through the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA). This means that if you hold a DVA WHITE or GOLD card you are entitled to 10 sessions with no financial cost to yourself. Private Insurance and Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) - Some insurance companies and employers may refer you or your immediate family members to a psychologist and assist with costs associated with visits. Workcover - In Queensland, WorkCover may refer you to a Psychologist once your claim has been approved. These sessions are time-limited and the number of sessions is determined by WorkCover after assessing your claim. Successful claims will result in the cost of your sessions being covered by WorkCover. Autism Initiative – Helping Children with Autism referral. A specialist referral is also available for children with Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorders, known as the Helping Children with Autism referral. This referral entitles the child to four assessment sessions and 20 therapy sessions with Medicare rebates (per lifetime, up to age 15 years). Better Start for Children with Disability Initiative - Under the Better Start for Children with Disability (Better Start) Initiative the identified disabilities are: Cerebral Palsy; Down Syndrome; Fragile X Syndrome and; Moderate or greater vision or hearing impairments. Therapy APPOINTMENT REFERRAL Bloom Psychology INFINITELY BLOOMING Bloom Psychology is a face to face (Brisbane, Ipswich, Toowoomba and surrounds) and an online/telehealth-based psychology practice that provides therapy, assessments, and supervision services. READ MORE Therapy services THERAPY SERVICES Common Counselling Issues Anxiety and Stress Bipolar Disorder Post-Traumatic Stress Panic Attacks Perinatal Mental Health Post-natal Depression and Women’s Health Issues affecting Older Adults Anger Management Chronic Pain Fears (Phobias) Schizophrenia Return to Work Weight Loss Management Adjusting to life stressors & maximising happiness Depression Crisis Intervention Grief and Loss Sleep Management Relationship Issues Substance Abuse and Dependence Obsessive-Compulsive Behaviours Therapies 1 Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Dialectical-behavioural therapy has shown remarkable promise at helping people manage their emotions and cope with distress even when they don't have an underlying mental health diagnosis. This approach blends individual and group therapy with life skills training, mindfulness-based approaches, and an intensive focus on helping you better identify, understand, and regulate your emotions, reactions, and behaviours. 2 Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Cognitive-Behavioural therapy works on the premise that our thoughts affect our behaviour and our behaviour affects our lives. Through CBT you'll work to identify unhealthy and misleading thoughts, then replace them with healthier and more accurate ideas. CBT therapists often assign homework or even worksheets, so CBT works best when you're willing to do extensive work on your own, outside the walls of therapy. 3 Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, known as ‘ACT’ (pronounced as the word ‘act’) is a mindfulness based behavioural therapy that challenges the ground rules of most Western psychology. It utilises an eclectic mix of metaphor, paradox, and mindfulness skills, along with a wide range of experiential exercises and values-guided behavioural interventions. ACT has proven effective with a diverse range of clinical conditions; depression, OCD, workplace stress, chronic pain, the stress of terminal cancer, anxiety, PTSD, anorexia, heroin abuse, marijuana abuse, and even schizophrenia. 4 Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) EMDR is a structured therapy that encourages the patient to focus briefly on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories. EMDR therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and PTSD symptoms. Ongoing research supports positive clinical outcomes showing EMDR therapy as a helpful treatment for disorders such as anxiety, depression, OCD, chronic pain, addictions, and other distressing life experiences (Maxfield, 2019 ). EMDR therapy has even been superior to Prozac in trauma treatment (Van der Kolk et al., 2007 ). Shapiro and Forrest (2016 ) share that more than 7 million people have been treated successfully by 110,000 therapists in 130 countries since 2016. 5 Mindfulness-Based Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (MCBT) Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is a modified form of cognitive therapy that incorporates mindfulness practices such as meditation and breathing exercises. Using these tools, MBCT therapists teach clients how to break away from negative thought patterns that can cause a downward spiral into a depressed state so they will be able to fight off depression before it takes hold. 6 Mindfulness Mindfulness is a mental state of awareness, focus and openness – which allows you to engage fully in what you are doing at any moment. In a state of mindfulness, difficult thoughts and feelings have much less impact and influence over you – so it is hugely useful for everything from full-blown psychiatric illness to enhancing athletic or business performance. 7 Motivational Interviewing Motivational interviewing is a counselling method that helps people resolve ambivalent feelings and insecurities to find the internal motivation they need to change their behaviour. It is a practical, empathetic, and short-term process that takes into consideration how difficult it is to make life changes. DBT CBT ACT EMDR MCBT Mindfulness Motivational Interviewing
