Different types of referrals
Mental Health Care Plan - The Mental Health Care Plan is completed by your doctor if – following a consultation with you – they assess you as qualifying for Medicare Rebates under this plan. The mental health care plan is common form of referral and details your symptoms, any diagnosis, and current issues. It allows you to obtain six individual therapy sessions at a rebated price, with the possibility of an additional four. This means you would be entitled to up to ten rebated individual sessions. You don’t need to already be diagnosed to receive a care plan from your GP. Please note, however, that although Medicare rebates can be claimed for sessions covered under a Mental Health Care Plan, there is a ‘gap fee’ involved.

Better Outcomes in Mental Health ATAPS - Your GP may refer you under the Better Outcomes in Mental Health Initiative. Although this referral is very similar to the Mental Health Care Plan, it is subsidised by the Greater Metro South Brisbane Medicare Local, and hence there is no cost to you. Your GP will assess the availability and your eligibility for this referral. This Better Outcomes referral has specific eligibility criteria which must be met for referral and there is a set time frame in which the sessions must be utilised.

Department of Veterans Affairs/ Open Arms - Bloom Psychology is pleased to be a provider of psychological services to our veterans through the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA). This means that if you hold a DVA WHITE or GOLD card you are entitled to 10 sessions with no financial cost to yourself.

Private Insurance and Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) - Some insurance companies and employers may refer you or your immediate family members to a psychologist and assist with costs associated with visits.

Workcover - In Queensland, WorkCover may refer you to a Psychologist once your claim has been approved. These sessions are time-limited and the number of sessions is determined by WorkCover after assessing your claim. Successful claims will result in the cost of your sessions being covered by WorkCover.
Autism Initiative – Helping Children with Autism referral. A specialist referral is also available for children with Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorders, known as the Helping Children with Autism referral. This referral entitles the child to four assessment sessions and 20 therapy sessions with Medicare rebates (per lifetime, up to age 15 years).
Better Start for Children with Disability Initiative - Under the Better Start for Children with Disability (Better Start) Initiative the identified disabilities are: Cerebral Palsy; Down Syndrome; Fragile X Syndrome and; Moderate or greater vision or hearing impairments. Children who are aged under six years and have been diagnosed with one of the listed disabilities are able to register to access early intervention funding of up to $12,000 (up to a maximum of $6,000 per financial year). The funding can be used to pay for early intervention services such as psychology. Families will have until the child’s seventh birthday to access the early intervention funding. To register your child for the Better Start Initiative, please call the Carers Australia Registration Information Service on 1800 242 636.
Pregnancy Support Counselling - This psychology service (Medicare Item 81000 rebate of $68.10) offers pregnancy support counselling to assist clients who have any personal concerns related to a current or recent pregnancy (within the past 12 months), whether it has been full-term or part-term (including a planned termination).
